Navigating the Challenges of Unemployment Claims After Workplace Harassment

I recently faced a challenging situation regarding my husband's employment and subsequent unemployment claim. Two years ago, he took an approved medical leave of absence due to hospitalization and rehabilitation. Upon his return, he was subjected to severe harassment at work, including being forced into a demotion, facing significant pay cuts, and having his requests for time off denied. Despite multiple reports to HR, nothing changed, and the harassment escalated to the point where he felt he had no choice but to walk off his last shift after being denied time off for my sister's wedding. After leaving, he applied for unemployment and was initially approved. He complied with all requirements and attended necessary calls, during which the general manager who harassed him did not participate. However, a month later, we received a letter stating that he needed to repay the unemployment benefits, with the state claiming he committed fraud. We were shocked, especially since we believed he acted in good faith throughout the process. We learned from a former co-worker that HR had intervened, resulting in the firing of one manager and the transfer of the GM due to the circumstances surrounding my husband's treatment. Now, we're exploring legal options, as our attempts to appeal the overpayment have been unsuccessful, and our senator's office indicated they couldn't assist us. We're concerned about the potential consequences, such as wage garnishment or debt collection, and we're unsure of our next steps.
