Seeking Guidance to Transition from Stuck Management Trainee Role in Sales

I am feeling really stuck in my current job and desperately need some guidance. I graduated from a Tier 2 B-School in India, one of the New IIMs, and landed a position at a reputed institution. While the compensation wasn't great, I thought being in a well-known organization would help me transition to a better role later on. I joined as a Management Trainee and spent the first six months rotating through different departments before being placed in their sales and distribution vertical. My goal was to gain some hands-on experience in field sales for a few months and then move into a different internal role. However, after a year in sales, it became clear that the company was not going to allow me to switch roles. They keep giving excuses as to why I can't move on, and I acknowledge that my performance in sales has been average at best. I have no desire to continue in this role, yet I feel trapped. Now, when I apply for other positions, I struggle to even get interviews. It feels like I'm being pigeonholed as just a salesperson, and I'm unsure how to navigate my career from here. If anyone has experienced something similar or has advice on how to break out of this situation, I would greatly appreciate your help. Thank you!
