I’m currently in the middle of a background check for a software engineering job I applied for, and I'm feeling a bit anxious about it. The majority of the check came back clear, but I noticed that two of my previous employment items are marked as "Review." The report has already been sent to the hiring company, and they mentioned that an adjudicator would reach out if they needed more information. The first item is from my most recent employer, where I worked remotely from June 2022 to October 2023. The background screening agency had trouble contacting my previous employer because they used third-party providers for employment and payroll, specifically TriNet and Rippling. I submitted a bunch of documentation to support my employment, including my signed offer letter, records from both providers, and tax documents. They acknowledged that I provided the necessary documentation, but it’s still under review. The second item is a short independent contractor project I did in 2025, which I listed on my resume as an NDA project. I provided my signed contractor agreement and payment records. The report noted that they didn’t contact this employer because it was the same company requesting the report, which is unrelated to the hiring company. Now I’m left wondering if it’s common for items to be marked as "Review" when they can’t reach a company, if the background screening teams usually accept the documents I provided when direct contact fails, and whether this is just a clarification step or something more serious that could jeopardize my job offer. If anyone has been through something similar, I’d really appreciate your insights.
