I’m feeling emotionally drained as I navigate the challenges of supporting my husband after his recent layoff. He was let go about three months ago, marking his second layoff in just a year. While I’m fortunate to still have my job, the shift from a two-income household to one has taken a toll on both of us, especially his mental health. After his first layoff, he managed to find a new role fairly quickly through a referral, but this time around, the job market has been tough on him, particularly in his field of research and insights, which has been significantly impacted by AI advancements. Despite being experienced and educated, he’s struggled to find opportunities, and although he’s had a few interviews, nothing has panned out. As someone who works in recruiting (albeit in a different industry), I’ve tried to help him by identifying job openings, suggesting alternative career paths, and offering assistance with applications. However, I’ve noticed that sometimes my involvement seems to add to his stress rather than alleviate it. Communication has become a challenge; he’s not very open about his job search, and when I bring it up, he often shuts down or changes the subject. I want to be supportive without coming across as intrusive, but the financial strain is becoming increasingly stressful, and I feel the need to understand what our plan is moving forward. I’m starting to feel isolated as I carry both the financial and emotional weight of our situation. I know that finding a job in this market isn’t easy, and I don’t expect him to have all the answers. However, I wish we could have more open discussions about where things stand, especially since he’s approaching the end of his unemployment benefits. I want to be proactive in addressing our situation before it becomes even more stressful. I’m reaching out to anyone who has been in a similar situation, either as the partner of someone unemployed or as someone who has experienced unemployment themselves. What strategies helped you or your partner during this time? Were there things said or done with good intentions that ended up being counterproductive? How did you manage conversations about finances and job applications without feeling pressured? I genuinely want to support my husband, but I’m struggling to find the right balance.
