I was laid off just hours before I was set to leave for a two-week PTO. This happened two weeks ago after I had been with the company for 7 years and 6 months. My manager scheduled a 1:1 meeting, and I thought it was just to touch base before my vacation. However, when I joined the call, I saw two people from HR and someone above my manager instead of my manager. The next 20 minutes felt like a blur as I received the news, and all the excitement I had about my upcoming trip vanished. In the days that followed, I felt a heavy cloud over me, making it hard to enjoy my vacation. I was acutely aware of the costs of everything I wanted to do. Thankfully, being away helped me not dwell too much on the layoff. I was in a different country, and it allowed me to mentally reset. Now that I'm back, the worry about finding a new job is real. Getting laid off is tough, but I think the vacation helped me cope better. I've updated my resume and created different versions tailored to the roles I'm interested in. I'm also taking a couple of courses to fill my time and enhance my skills. I found out that my team was significantly impacted; out of 12 members, 8 were laid off, and the remaining 4 were given options to move to another team or take a severance package. It seems like my team has been dissolved. I just wanted to share my experience of getting laid off right before my vacation.
