I'm currently facing a tough decision between two job opportunities that could shape my career path. Right now, I'm stuck in a dead-end job at a local city courthouse after graduating with a Bachelor's in Criminal Justice last May. The pay is mediocre, and my hours have been cut, but since I live with my parents, I’m managing. My long-term goal is to attend law school and eventually work in the federal sector, either in investigations or the legal field. My first option is a potential legal assistant role with the DOJ. I'm in the interview process for various locations, and if I get the job, I would start at a GS-5 or GS-6 level with a base salary around $40k a year, which could increase to about $45-50k with locality pay. While this job would be a great stepping stone into federal employment, I'm worried that the salary might not be enough to sustain myself, especially in more expensive cities. I also have about $18k in car debt, which requires a minimum payment of $465 monthly. If I move, managing that debt could become more challenging, and I might even need to consider selling my car to avoid being in debt. The second option is a role as a surveillance investigator with a private investigations firm. They’ve offered me an hourly rate of $26, with the potential for overtime and a $3,000 sign-on bonus. This position would be local, allowing me to continue living at home and keeping my expenses low. While the pay is decent and the work seems interesting, I’m concerned that it might not offer the same growth opportunities as the federal job and may not look as impressive on my resume. I'm really torn between these two paths and would appreciate any advice or insights from others who have faced similar decisions.
