I recently came across the latest jobs report, which revealed that only 57,000 jobs were added in June, significantly below economists' expectations. While the unemployment rate dipped to 4.2%, this is largely due to around 720,000 people completely dropping out of the job market. It’s disheartening to see that most of the hiring is concentrated in just three sectors: professional services, social assistance, and healthcare. Meanwhile, industries like hospitality actually lost 61,000 jobs. As I continue my job search, I’ve been writing resumes daily and noticing a frustrating pattern. My inbox is filled with silence after applying to numerous positions, leading me to question whether my resume is the issue or if I’m somehow at fault. While I recognize that sometimes a resume does need improvement, I also understand that the current job market dynamics play a huge role in this struggle. The reality is that job openings are mostly in sectors where I don’t have experience. I’m sharing this not to bring anyone down but to remind myself and others that it’s important not to internalize this structural slowdown as a personal failure. It can be easy to burn out during a job search, especially when the odds seem stacked against you. I’m curious if anyone has successfully transitioned into one of these growing sectors mid-career and what that experience was like.
