I recently received a job offer that comes with the highest salary I've ever been offered, but I find myself feeling extremely depressed about it. Currently, I work from home for a corporate Food/Beverage company on a small team of five, which is part of a larger global team. I've been in this role for 2.5 years, and while it started off great, it has turned into a frustrating situation. I began in a junior position, which was fine since it paid the same as my previous job and allowed me to work remotely. However, after two and a half years, I remain the lowest paid and most junior member of my team, despite discussions about upward mobility that have led nowhere. In June, I took a chance and interviewed for a retail management position, not expecting much. The salary was lower than my current job, and the commute was a hassle, but to my surprise, they loved me. After three rounds of interviews, they offered me the job at $5,000 above the listed compensation. I initially declined, asking for an additional $5,000 to $10,000. They came back with an extra $1,000, which I also turned down, but then they offered an additional $6,000, bringing the total to $13,000 more than my current salary, plus opportunities for overtime and bonuses. They even changed the location to one just 15 minutes away from me. I informed my boss about the new offer, and she immediately began working on a retention offer. She confirmed that her boss was on board to provide me with a competitive offer. I accepted the new job offer, planning to back out if my current employer came through with a better offer. However, after weeks of waiting for my company's offer to be finalized, I received a call confirming an offer that was only 50% of what I was led to expect, with a dubious bonus structure. Now, the start date for the new job is next Monday, and I feel I can't turn down the financial security it offers, especially since I live in a high-cost-of-living area. My current job has become increasingly stressful, and I feel overwhelmed with responsibilities, leading to a decline in my work performance. I’m not enjoying my work, and my mental health has taken a hit. I plan to take a couple of sick days next week to transition into the new job, which I’m not excited about. I know I’ll be back in management, which isn’t my favorite role, and I’ll lose the work/life balance I’ve enjoyed. I’m struggling to find motivation, and I’ve been drinking more than I should. It’s a tough situation, and I’m feeling quite lost.
