Frustrated with pay increase after added responsibilities as collections clerk

I started working as a collections clerk at a local business on June 3rd, after a previous contract fell through. I took this position for $20 an hour, significantly less than my usual pay, just to help pay the bills while I searched for a better role. Initially, the job was easy and allowed me time to apply for other positions. However, I was soon asked to take on additional accounting responsibilities when the staff accountant went on vacation and ultimately quit. My contract didn’t cover these new duties, but the company bought it out early, promising a pay increase once the two-month waiting period ended. Last Monday, that period ended, and I was told my new pay would be $22.50 an hour. I felt insulted, especially since I was expecting to earn closer to $37.50 based on my additional responsibilities and qualifications. When I asked about negotiating, my boss said it wasn’t in the budget, despite my proven skills and positive feedback. I’m really frustrated because I had stopped applying for other jobs, thinking I would be compensated fairly. I just needed to vent about this situation and am open to any advice.
