Reflecting on Interview Honesty: Sharing My Burnout Experience

I recently had an interview for a position, and during the process, I was asked why I had been out of work for almost a year. I decided to be honest and explained that after my last job, I was very burned out and needed some time to recharge before looking for new opportunities. While the interviewers said they understood, I sensed that the atmosphere shifted a bit and became somewhat cold after my response. Now, I'm left wondering if I shared too much. I value honesty, but I'm starting to question whether being too open about my burnout was the right approach. I don't have any negative reasons for my time off—there were no firings or legal issues involved, just a genuine need to take care of my mental health for a few months. In hindsight, I wonder if I should have kept my answer simpler. I’m curious if anyone else has taken a long break from work and how they handled similar questions in interviews. Did you share the real reason, or did you opt for a more concise answer? I'm eager to learn what works best in these situations.
