Reflections on Losing a Job Offer Over a Non-Compete Clause Inquiry

I recently had an offer withdrawn after I raised concerns about a non-compete clause in my offer letter. The non-compete was extremely broad, stating that I couldn't work for any company in the industry for a year, which is enforceable in New Jersey. I asked if they could narrow the scope of it, and to my surprise, they decided to withdraw the offer. It left me wondering if I dodged a bullet or if asking questions is frowned upon in today’s job market. I’ve heard from others that overly broad non-competes can be unenforceable, so perhaps I made the right call by questioning it. Still, it’s disheartening to think that a simple inquiry could lead to losing an opportunity.
