I recently started a new job as a programmer about four months ago after leaving my previous position where I worked remotely for five years. I made the switch because I felt underpaid and wanted to pursue better financial opportunities, especially considering how tough the job market has been. After applying for jobs for two years, I accepted the first offer that came my way, which required me to work in-office five days a week and commute a decent distance. This was a significant change for me, especially since I struggle with severe anxiety and emetophobia, but I was determined to make more money. However, now I feel trapped in this new role. Although I've been recognized for my contributions—like modernizing their system with new libraries—I'm frustrated by the niche programming language and the UI-based coding environment. It just doesn't align with my skills or interests, and I can't see myself staying long-term. I’m grappling with the idea of quitting. It’s a small office with only five people, and I feel guilty about leaving, even though I know I need to prioritize my own career satisfaction. I have the option to return to my old employer, which provides some job security, but I’m unsure how to approach resigning. I don’t want to simply say I dislike the development environment, and I feel like I need a better excuse. I’m trying to prepare for this decision, but I’m struggling with the emotional weight of it all.
