Navigating a Frustrating Recruiter Experience for an Engineering Role

I recently had an experience with a recruiter that left me feeling frustrated. I was approached for an engineering position in my city, and although I was content in my current job, I was intrigued by the opportunity since it was closer to home. I agreed to a virtual interview with the engineering manager, which I felt went well. Just 30 minutes later, the HR personnel reached out to schedule a second interview for just three days later. I hadn't even had time to fully process the first interview or the details of the position. The recruiter called me afterward and urged me to think seriously about the opportunity, mentioning that they were moving quickly and likely to make an offer if the second interview went well. However, I was also communicating directly with the company’s HR, which added to the confusion. After some reflection, I realized I wasn't ready to make a switch and was genuinely happy where I was. So, I decided to email both the HR director and the recruiter, thanking them for their time but asking to withdraw from the applicant pool, doing this 24 hours before the second interview. I felt it was a respectful move, but now I'm questioning if I handled it poorly by going straight to HR. The recruiter responded with a rude message, implying I was unprofessional for changing my mind. I’m not planning to apologize for my decision or for not sending referrals, as I don’t have any to offer. I’m considering forwarding the recruiter's message to HR to highlight his unprofessional behavior. Was I wrong to go directly to HR? I’m feeling conflicted about whether I should have handled it differently.
