I just experienced my first layoff after working only four days at a fancy cafe. I’m feeling heartbroken and embarrassed. This was my first real job, even though I’ve done some volunteer work and campus jobs before. My boss took a chance on me knowing I had little experience, but I feel like I let him down. The learning curve was steep, but I was really trying to pick things up quickly and worked hard every day. I asked questions when I was unsure, which I thought was encouraged, but apparently, that was one of the reasons I was let go. I was told that I should have known better after just two days on the job, which feels incredibly unfair. I made a few minor mistakes, like dropping a pastry, but nothing that seemed drastic to me. Now, I’m left feeling insecure and questioning if someone else could have done better in my position. I was really looking forward to this opportunity and had started to connect with my coworkers, but now it feels like I’ll never see them again. It’s frustrating that I can’t even put this on my resume since it was so short. I’m not actively looking for a new job right now, as I was just trying to gain experience while in college, but I could really use some words of wisdom or comfort to help me feel less alone in this situation.
