Navigating Employment Gaps: Honesty and Connection in Job Searching

I recently faced the challenge of explaining the employment gap on my resume. After being laid off from my role at a tech startup, I had to navigate the job market while also being selective about the positions I applied for. I found that being honest with recruiters was key; I explained that I was part of a restructure and have been actively looking for a role that aligns with my skills and values. I also learned to pivot the conversation towards why the role at Company C is a perfect match for my background. It’s important to remember that recruiters are human too, and sharing my experience candidly helped to build a connection. I also considered how to frame my gap positively, mentioning a medical situation that required my attention, which ultimately allowed me to return to work at my full capacity.
