I experienced a tough layoff back in 2018 when I was working in a marketing role. Everyone around me was talking about how the job market was booming, yet I found myself without a job and no one seemed to care. I was met with responses like, "Stop complaining" and "Just network harder." It felt like I was being told to simply pull myself up by my bootstraps without any real understanding of my situation. Determined to rebuild my career, I took on jobs that weren't ideal for me and put my pride aside. It was a challenging time, and I had to work hard to get back on my feet. Now, as I see others expressing their frustrations about the current job market, I can't help but notice how quickly some of the same people who once preached personal responsibility are now seeking empathy. It seems like the narrative has shifted from "just work harder" to "the system is broken" now that they are facing difficulties themselves. I guess I feel a bit jaded about it all, having gone through my own struggles without much sympathy back then. I needed to vent about this observation, as it brings back memories of my own tough experience.
