Facing issues with I-9 verification on my first day at new job

Today marks the beginning of my new job, but I'm already facing a significant issue. The employer provided me with my tax documents, but when it came time to sign the I-9, they refused to accept my social security card and driver's license. As a U.S. citizen, this raises a major red flag for me, and I'm feeling hesitant about moving forward with this position. I've reached out for advice, and it seems like many agree that this is not standard practice. Some suggested that I ensure I'm being classified as a W-2 employee rather than an independent contractor, and others pointed out that the documents I provided should be valid. I'm really unsure about what to do next and whether I should report this situation or seek clarification from them.
