I recently accepted a job offer as a medical receptionist at a small clinic in Arizona. They want me to work for 90 days as a 1099 employee during a trial period before transitioning to a W-2. This setup raises some red flags for me, as I have a dictated schedule from 8 AM to 5 PM, Monday through Friday, with a one-hour lunch break, and I'm required to purchase my own navy scrubs. I'll be shadowing the other receptionist for an hour on Monday, which they'll pay me in cash. My official start date is Wednesday, and that's when they'll begin counting my hours for my paycheck. I can't shake the feeling that I might be misclassified as a 1099 employee when I should actually be a W-2. It seems odd to me that they would use a 1099 for a trial period unless they're trying to avoid paying taxes. I liked the team during my interview and really want this job, so I'm planning to accept it. However, after the 90 days, I intend to bring up the classification issue with them. If they don't correct it, I'm considering reporting it to the IRS, but I'm unsure about that process. I would appreciate any advice on what paperwork I should keep track of, what business expenses I can write off while acting as a 1099, and how to gather evidence of misclassification if it comes to that. Can I write off gas or mileage for my leased car? I'm a broke college student trying to make ends meet, so any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
