I recently experienced a very difficult situation at my job as a software developer. For the past year, I was subjected to bullying from two managers and two developers who seemed determined to get me fired. It was a mentally exhausting environment, filled with smear campaigns and public humiliation. One colleague, in particular, would attack me during meetings and on Slack, claiming I was a blocker and suggesting others should help me do my job. She even excluded me from projects, bringing in another developer to work with her while publicly stating that others should reach out to her for questions about the project, completely disregarding my contributions. My manager added to the toxicity by making jokes at my expense and telling me to 'shut up' in front of others. When I confronted him about his behavior, he dismissed my concerns and instead encouraged the aggressive behavior of my colleague. I tried to address the issues directly, but my manager only made things worse, siding with her and even contradicting me in front of the team. The situation escalated to the point where I was let go, and I deeply regret not fighting harder to stay. I had a good relationship with the product owner, but my manager's smear campaign destroyed that. Despite my hard work and dedication, it felt like I was constantly undermined. Now that I've been fired, I can't shake the anger and frustration at how manipulative my manager was throughout this process. He even had the audacity to say he wished he could have fought for me in front of the CEO while smiling during the termination meeting. I feel like I let them win, and it's been hard to come to terms with this experience.
