Navigating housing challenges after job loss while starting new role at municipality

I recently moved out of my apartment two weeks ago after the rent skyrocketed, and now I'm facing some tough challenges. I've been through three layoffs in the past two years, which has drained my savings and left me in a financial hole. My previous rent was $1715 a month, and with unemployment only covering that, my credit card debt has piled up. I've been sleeping on the streets, but honestly, it doesn’t bother me much; it’s just a part of my life. However, my new employer, a municipality where I've just started working, found out about my situation and is pressuring me to find an apartment. They even offered me a hotel for ten days while I look for a place, which I appreciate given the heat outside. But I’m hesitant to sign a lease when I’m still in my probation period and unsure about job security. My boss keeps giving me contacts for churches to help, but I don’t want that kind of help. I feel like getting another apartment would just put me back in a situation where I’m not in control, and I don’t want to be at the mercy of landlords again. I’m almost 40, and I want to save my money for something more permanent, not waste it on rent. I’m worried that if I don’t find a place soon, I might lose my job, especially since I work in a security-sensitive role servicing county vehicles. It’s a tough spot to be in.
