I recently accepted a job offer for a position starting in December, and I'm feeling a bit anxious about an onboarding requirement. The company asked for car details to issue a parking permit, but I currently don’t own a car. My plan was to walk or bike to work until I can save enough to buy one. I really want to make a good impression, but I’m worried about how to communicate this to HR without seeming unprofessional or risking my new job. I live in a state with limited public transport options, and I know that some people might find it odd that I’d choose to walk or bike two miles to work. I’m considering just emailing HR to let them know that I won’t need a parking permit since I’ll be using alternative transportation. I’ve seen advice suggesting that I shouldn’t overexplain or apologize, as HR likely sends that form to everyone. I hope to convey that I prefer biking and walking for exercise, and that I may need a permit in the future if my situation changes. It’s just a bit nerve-wracking to navigate this before I even start.
