Navigating Unexpected Reference Requests After Job Interviews for Entry-Level Position

I recently went through a lengthy interview process for an entry-level position at a company, which included three rounds and an on-site, full-day interview. I received positive feedback throughout the process, and they requested references after the interviews. Last week, I learned that my references were contacted, and I was excited to schedule a Zoom call for this Friday. However, out of nowhere, they asked for 2-3 additional references who have directly supervised or closely mentored me. This has thrown me off a bit. I’ve only recently graduated, so I don’t have many managers to choose from, especially in relevant industries. They have already spoken to my Lab PI, and I reached out to my internship manager, but I'm unsure if they will respond. I'm feeling confused about the situation, especially since they scheduled a meeting and then requested more references. I’m hoping for some insight or advice from anyone who has experienced something similar.
