Navigating an unexpected $6,400 unemployment overpayment issue after layoff

I was laid off in January and received unemployment benefits until May when I found a new job. I thought everything was settled until I got an email from the Virginia Employment Commission (VEC) stating that I have an overpayment of $6,400 due to a retroactive disqualification. I had no idea this was coming and now I’m feeling overwhelmed. I plan to call them tomorrow to figure out what went wrong, but I’m unsure where to start. Has anyone else faced a similar situation? Any advice on how to handle this would be appreciated.
