Reflecting on the Pressure to Thank Employers After Layoffs

Today, I reflected on the trend of thanking employers on LinkedIn after being laid off. Honestly, I find it unsettling. It seems like many people feel pressured to maintain a professional facade, but I can't help but feel disgusted by those who publicly express gratitude towards companies that just let them go. I’ve experienced three layoffs in my career, and only one of those situations felt deserving of a thank you because they genuinely helped me transition to my next role. In my recent layoff, I didn’t thank the company at all during the meeting. When they thanked me for my contributions, I simply replied with "ok." I appreciated my coworkers and made sure to thank my manager, who had no part in the decision to lay me off, but I refuse to thank the higher-ups who pulled the plug on my job. It feels like a betrayal to show gratitude to those who contributed to my unemployment. I believe we should be more vocal about how wrong it is for profitable companies to lay off employees instead of normalizing this behavior.
