Today, I found myself reflecting on my role as a supervisor for a part-time employee who has been excelling at certain tasks. It’s a bit of a mixed bag; while I genuinely appreciate his skills and have learned a lot from him, I can’t help but feel overshadowed. Recently, I've noticed that leadership has started to give him credit for work that I've completed, and they often go directly to him for tasks that are technically my responsibility. This has been frustrating and has left me feeling like my contributions are going unnoticed. Adding to this, I've had a challenging year personally, dealing with postpartum issues and a high-conflict divorce, which has affected my memory and focus. I’m actively working on these challenges, but the combination of feeling overlooked at work and my personal struggles has been quite demoralizing. I really like my coworkers and don’t believe anyone is intentionally undermining me, but I’m starting to wonder if I should seek a new job altogether. I’ve been considering my options and thinking about how to address this situation. Some suggestions I’ve received include documenting instances where my work has been misattributed, talking to my supervisor about it, and even having a conversation with the intern to help redirect some tasks back to me. It’s a tough spot to be in, especially since I’m unionized and can’t be easily fired unless I accumulate five years of poor reviews, which I haven’t. I’m trying to figure out how to improve my situation while also maintaining my sanity and motivation at work.
