Navigating maternity leave anxiety and potential layoffs in communications role

I work in communications for a hospital system and I'm feeling anxious as I approach my maternity leave in about six weeks. There's been a lot of talk about potential layoffs, even though nothing has been officially announced. The atmosphere reminds me of a previous reduction in force we had a few years back, with all the same buzzwords floating around like 'financial headwinds' and 'major budget cuts.' It feels like something is brewing, especially with the way the c-suite is acting. I'm worried that being pregnant and going on FMLA won't protect me from being laid off. I'm curious if anyone has been laid off while on FMLA and what that experience was like. I'm also wondering if I should start job hunting now or wait until after I have my baby and settle in. Is it realistic to think employers would be interested in talking to someone who's about to be out of the office for three months? I'm feeling a bit lost and unsure of the best approach.
