Excited to Accept a New Engineering Position After 9-Month Job Search

After a long 9-month job search, I’m thrilled to share that I’ve accepted a position that aligns perfectly with my next life stage. Throughout 2026, I applied to around 30 jobs, receiving 3 offers in total. I realized that many of the positions I applied for were slightly above my experience level, which led to numerous rejections. It was frustrating, but it also made me reflect on my confidence regarding those applications. I learned to ask myself if I would truly thrive in those roles if I were hired. When I finally got interviews, I dedicated 3-4 days, spending 4-5 hours each day preparing. I researched the companies thoroughly, reviewed their websites, and even watched relevant YouTube videos. This preparation proved invaluable during interviews, especially when I could reference specific information from their site. I also made it a point to follow up with the HR or hiring manager after each interview, mentioning something we discussed. For instance, I noted that one manager had been with the company for 25 years, which sparked a great conversation. One key piece of advice I’d like to share is to start applying for jobs while you’re still employed. Company priorities can change quickly, and it’s important to look out for your own best interests. For me, my priorities were location, work flexibility, compensation, and then the job itself. I learned not to hesitate in rejecting offers that didn’t meet my criteria, even if it meant turning down a 5% raise. For context, I’m 28 years old with about 9 years of professional engineering experience. I found it helpful to prepare answers for common interview questions like "Why are you leaving your current company?" and "What notable projects have you worked on?" To anyone still job hunting, keep your spirits up! You can find the right fit.
