Frustrations of a New Accounting Grad in a Tough Job Market

Today was incredibly frustrating. I started my first day at a shipping solutions company, hoping it would be a fresh start after two years of searching for a job in accounting. I graduated with my bachelor's in accounting in 2023 and then went back to get my master's, but the job market has been brutal. I've faced countless rejections, even for junior roles, and have been let go from positions without clear feedback. During my first day, I felt like I was getting the hang of things and was even told I could leave early. But on my way home, the temp agency called to say my trainer wanted to end my assignment because she felt we clashed. I had a long conversation with my agency rep, expressing my frustration that vague reasons like 'personality clashes' often mask deeper issues. I found out that the previous hire for the role had also been let go on the same day due to the same trainer, which made me feel a bit vindicated but still angry. I can't help but wonder about the future for my generation. Gen Z is struggling to find stable jobs, and it's concerning to think about the long-term implications of this job market. We're being disproportionately affected, and I fear that if we can't secure employment, it will have ripple effects on the economy and society as a whole. What happens when we can't pay taxes or contribute to the workforce? I'm also worried about how corporations are handling these situations. They seem shortsighted, focusing on immediate profits without considering the long-term consequences of their actions. And then there's the rise of AI—how can we trust that technology will be able to replace skilled professionals like accountants? Overall, today was a harsh reminder of the challenges I face as a young Black woman in this job market, and I'm left feeling disheartened and uncertain about my future.
