I recently had an interview for a contract position, and it turned out to be quite an interesting experience. The employer had my resume in hand and pointed out that it was different from the one I submitted. I explained that I tailor my resumes for each job I apply for, which led to a discussion about why I didn’t include certain skills and certifications. He asked why I left out my CompTIA certification and my Top Secret security clearance. I decided to be honest and told him that the job didn’t require those qualifications, and I didn’t think it would affect my pay given the salary range they offered. Surprisingly, he appreciated my straightforwardness, and today I received a call offering me a 12-month contract! I guess my honesty worked in my favor.
