I recently applied for a job that required references, and I encountered a strange situation during the reference check process. A few days after submitting my application, one of my references received a call from someone claiming to be conducting a reference check. The caller mentioned a name that was similar to mine but not correct—something like "Craig" instead of "Greg." My reference was confused and confirmed the name with the caller, but they stated they didn't know anyone by that name. I had informed my reference that they would be contacted, so they were prepared, but this mix-up was unexpected. I reached out to the company for a general update on my application but didn’t mention the odd interaction. The next day, the same number called my reference again, and when they asked which company was calling, the caller abruptly hung up. My reference ended up blocking the number, suspecting it might be spam or a scam. This was the only job I applied to that requested references upfront, and it feels like there’s a connection to my application. I’m curious if anyone else has experienced something similar or has any insights on what might be happening.
