US Steel Corporation Gary Works & Morrison Healthcare Prepare For Layoffs In Indiana

layoffs

The holidays have brought layoffs across the country with several companies announcing layoffs in the state of Indiana. Morrison Healthcare submitted its WARN just before Christmas on December 22. It explains that the company is carrying out a layoff that will impact hourly and salaried associates at Morrison Healthcare as well as members of Compass Group North America.

The layoffs are expected to be effective on January 25, 2023. The layoffs are the result of Morrison losing its food service contract with Lutheran Hospital. It is anticipated that 126 food workers across two hospitals will be laid off.

  • Lutheran Hospital – 7950 West Jefferson Boulevard, Fort Wayne, Indiana
  • KCH Lutheran – 2101 East DuBois Drive, Warsaw, Indiana

The action is expected to be permanent, but Morrison believes most workers will be hired by the new vendor. United States Steel Corporation also submitted a WARN in Indiana. The WARN, which was dated December 27, 2022, explains that the employment losses are caused by the indefinite idling of the majority of the tin operations at the company’s Gary Works facility.

The actions are due to market conditions that are out of the company’s control, including reduced demand for tin products and increased tin mill imports. The impacted Gary Works facility is located at One North Broadway in Gary, Indiana. Layoffs will commence on February 26, 2023, and could continue as long as the underlying market conditions last.

Among the workers being laid off include 125 utility technicians and three senior operation technicians. In total, the company will lay off 244 workers.

  1. Wikipedia states on site: ‘Gary Works’ that the U.S. Steel plant will be defunct on April28. 2023. I can find no confirmation of this. Does anyone know if this is true.
