Connecticut hit with layoffs from UPS, Freight Handlers, Walgreens, and others

Connecticut workers are preparing for layoffs with multiple companies filing WARNs recently. Hundreds of workers will be laid off across the state in the months ahead.

UPS Layoffs

UPS filed a WARN saying all employees assigned to the CT Hub in a Box Twilight and Night Sorts at 1 Market Circle in Windsor will be laid off. UPS explains that the layoffs will be permanent due to the lack of available work at the aforementioned location.

UPS will still have operations at the location. Workers are expected to be laid off on April 2, 2024. The impacted workers include 72 part-time hourly employees, 23 full-time hourly workers, and 23 part-time supervisors.

Freight Handlers Layoffs

Freight Handlers LLC said in a WARN that it plans to close its operation at 1315 Tolland Turnpike in Manchester due to the termination of its contract with ADUSA Distribution. The closing is expected to result in the permanent suspension of all Freight Handlers operations at the aforementioned facility. All workers at or reporting to the facility will be laid off unless employment is offered by ADUSA.

The terminations are expected to occur on March 31, 2024. It is anticipated that Freight Handlers will lay off 383 workers at this location.

Cascades Containerboard Packaging Layoffs

Cascades Containerboard Packaging filed a WARN announcing its intent to permanently close its manufacturing facility at 1 Edmond Road in Newtown. The closure will take place between April 12 and April 26, 2024. The action is expected to be permanent. Some workers are represented by the United Steel Workers Local 4-0902.

It is anticipated that the company will lay off 71 workers.

First Student Layoffs

After losing its Student Transportation Contract with the Branford School District, First Student said in a WARN that it would lay off workers. First Student will stop providing this service after the end of the 2023-2024 school year occurring on or around June 30, 2024.

The operations serving Branford Public Schools located at 189 North Main Street will be closing on or around June 30, 2024. All First Student employees at this location will be permanently laid off unless they transfer to another First Student location. 65 workers are expected to be impacted.

Trinity Terraces Layoffs

According to a WARN from Trinity Terraces, the Connecticut Superior Court has ordered the receiver to commence the regulatory process to close Trinity Terraces permanently. The company says it is working to find new homes for residents in preparation for the closure of the facility.

The company does not know the exact date, but the court order requires the process to be completed by May 15, 2024. 67 workers will be laid off due to the impending closure.

Walgreens Layoffs

Finally, Walgreens submitted a WARN in Connecticut saying it has developed plants to reduce its workforce. The company has decided to close its Dayville, Connecticut distribution center at 500 Forbes Road. The associated employment separations are expected to begin on or around May 17, 2024.

The changes will be permanent and will impact the entire facility. In total, Walgreens will be permanently laying off 322 workers at this location.
