I recently had an experience with a recruiter from a well-known financial services company in New York that left me feeling confused and a bit uneasy. She initially reached out to me after finding my LinkedIn profile and praised my corporate development experience. However, I informed her that I was no longer interested in corporate development roles and wanted to transition into marketing instead. She seemed supportive and mentioned that she would forward my résumé to the hiring team for review. Things took a turn when she sent me an email with a link to a résumé review service on Upwork, which charges starting at $200. It felt strange to me because I’ve received great feedback on my résumé from managers at reputable companies like Google. I expected her to provide constructive feedback herself instead of directing me to a paid service. I shared my concerns with friends, and they suggested that this might be a scam, especially since it seems like she could be getting a kickback for referring candidates to this résumé reviewer. The whole situation just feels off, and I’m questioning the legitimacy of this recruitment process.
