I recently started working as a medical receptionist at a small clinic in early May. As the only white employee among about ten staff members, I've been experiencing some troubling dynamics that are making me question whether I should quit. From the beginning, I've felt a sense of discrimination. A coworker made a negative remark about white people when I came in for my interview, and since then, I’ve been met with coldness and silence from her. She often ignores my questions and only engages with our other coworkers, which makes it difficult to build a working relationship. Things escalated when I noticed she has a close relationship with our boss, the doctor. She frequently shares false information about my work performance, claiming I don’t do anything when I’m actually busy with calls and patient follow-ups. Despite my efforts, I’ve been called into his office multiple times to address these unfounded accusations. It’s disheartening to be criticized for mistakes I haven’t made, and I feel like I’m being unfairly monitored. The doctor has also made comments implying that I should feel lucky to have this job, stating he has many more qualified candidates. This feels belittling, especially since I’m genuinely trying to do my best. I’ve been told that my help isn’t needed for covering shifts, which feels like a dismissal of my contributions. Additionally, the work environment is stressful. The doctor is often late for appointments, leaving me to handle frustrated patients. I can’t help but feel overwhelmed by the toxic atmosphere, especially when I learned that the receptionist before me left under similar circumstances. I love being a receptionist, but the emotional toll this job is taking on me is becoming unbearable. I’m starting to wonder if it’s time to look for a new job. Should I quit?
