I recently lost my sense of direction in my career. I'm a 22-year-old working in fiber optics in the Pacific Northwest, and I've been with my current company for just three months. Unfortunately, for the past two months, I've been sent out of town for work, sometimes for 1-3 weeks at a time. This has taken a toll on my personal life, as I have a girlfriend who I plan to propose to soon. I find myself missing out on important moments like birthdays and spending quality time at home, all for a job that pays only $22 an hour. The job market here seems to be saturated with out-of-town positions, and I feel trapped since we just bought a house and can't relocate. I can't keep sacrificing my happiness for a job that keeps me away from my loved ones. I'm looking for alternative blue-collar career paths that don’t require a college degree or trade school. I have a high school diploma, but I can't go back to school right now. Before this, I tried flagging for a year, but the hours were inconsistent, and I often went weeks without work. I need to find a way to provide for my girlfriend and pay our mortgage while also finding a job that allows me to be home more often.
