I was laid off from a job I truly loved after 11 months of hard work and dedication. At 28 years old, this was my first experience with a layoff, and it has left me feeling utterly worthless. I reached out to HR, and they informed me that my record of employment would be sent out soon, allowing me to apply for EI benefits. The day before my layoff, I had asked my shift supervisor about my contract renewal meeting, only to be blindsided a few hours later when I was called into a meeting with him and his boss. Instead of discussing a full-time position, I was told I was being laid off, but reassured that it wasn’t a firing. Honestly, that distinction doesn’t change how it looks on my resume to potential employers. Throughout my time there, I consistently received positive feedback from my supervisors and coworkers, who all believed I deserved a full-time position. I was always punctual, often arriving 15-30 minutes early, and I was the only one from my original hiring group who didn’t quit or stop showing up. I never complained about being moved to a different factory or having my shifts changed multiple times without notice. I adapted quickly to new roles and maintained high productivity without making mistakes. When I confronted my supervisor about why I was being laid off, I was met with vague responses that only fueled my frustration. I felt completely gaslit when they claimed there was no position available, despite having worked in that role for nearly a year. The emotional toll of this experience was overwhelming, and I found myself screaming into a pillow at home, feeling utterly betrayed by a company I had given so much to. I loved the job, the people, and the management, and now it feels like none of that mattered.

I was just let go from my contract position at a factory in Ontario, Canada, where I had been working for 11 months. I was called into the office by my supervisor and his boss, and they informed me that my contract was being terminated because there wasn’t a position available. This was incredibly frustrating because I had been doing my job well, rarely making mistakes, and I was even told multiple times that I deserved a full-time position, which was supposed to happen in July. Instead, they ended my contract two weeks early without any warning or reason other than the lack of a position. I feel completely blindsided and desperate. I’ve been through a long job search process before, applying to over 10 jobs a day for seven months just to land this contract. Now, I’m in a tough spot with rent, bills, and groceries to pay for. I’ve already contacted temp agencies and started updating my resume, but I don’t have a reference from this job since they didn’t provide one. I’m reaching out for any advice on what to do next. I’m not sure how to navigate this situation, and I’m feeling lost.
