I was laid off just five weeks into my new role at a well-known Ad Tech company, and I'm feeling pretty frustrated right now. I grew up in NYC and had been working in corporate roles for over four years after college. I started my career at a Fortune 500 media conglomerate, where I began at $55k and eventually reached $72k. While I was part of a successful ad sales team that consistently exceeded goals, there wasn't much opportunity for growth, which led me to seek new challenges. I set my LinkedIn to 'open to work' and started receiving some recruiter messages. One day, I got a message from a recruiter about a new team being formed at an Ad Tech company, offering a significant salary jump to around $99k with bonuses. I was excited about the opportunity and went through four rounds of interviews, culminating in a meeting with the CFO, which resulted in a job offer. I was thrilled to leave my stable job for this new position and had a tough conversation with my manager to resign. Fast forward to today, after just five weeks of training and trying to get the hang of my new role, I received an email from the new CEO about an organizational restructure. I thought, 'This can't be happening to me; I just started!' But then HR scheduled a one-on-one with me, and I was informed that my role, along with others on the new team, was being eliminated. It hit me hard, especially knowing that one of my new colleagues had relocated for this job. I left a stable position for a higher-paying role, and now I'm back to square one after only five weeks. This experience has taught me a valuable lesson about the unpredictability of corporate life and the importance of not taking anything for granted. The only guarantees in life are death and taxes, it seems. On a lighter note, they did say I could keep the company laptop, so there's that. Thanks for listening to my story, and good luck to everyone out there.
