I'm currently working as an L1 Service Desk technician in an entry-level IT role, and I've been in this position for about 1.5 years. However, my actual responsibilities go far beyond typical service desk tasks. I manage production servers, oversee high-stakes projects, and handle change and transformation engagements, all while dealing with stakeholder interactions. Despite the good pay and benefits, I've lost the passion I once had for helping others. I used to enjoy resolving issues and achieving positive outcomes, but now I dread going to work. My workload is overwhelming, and even my managers acknowledge that we are understaffed. I've been promised leadership opportunities, but lately, I've felt detached and apathetic due to the sheer volume of work. I'm considering applying for other L1 support roles in my area, which pay slightly less but might offer a better work-life balance. I'm conflicted about wanting to step back, but I'm exhausted and tired of pretending to be happy in my current role.
