I recently went through a challenging job search experience that left me feeling disheartened. I applied for a B2B sales account specialist position back in early May, confident in my background for the role. The job posting advertised a salary range of $68k-$84k with full-time hours and good benefits, which sounded promising. After four interviews with HR and various team members, I felt I had nailed the in-person interview. The interviewer even complimented my preparation, which made me hopeful for a job offer. However, when I received the final call from HR, I was devastated to learn that the role had changed to part-time with a pay of only $15.00 per hour, limiting me to a maximum of 24 hours a week. It felt like a huge letdown, especially since the position had so much potential. I also interviewed for another job with a different company that I applied for in early April. I made it to the final interview right after the Fourth of July weekend. Similar to the first experience, they had advertised a reasonable pay range. However, when we discussed salary expectations, I was hit with a lowball offer. The interviewer claimed that with overtime and meeting sales goals, I might see around $55k, which is far from what I was expecting. Living in an area with a high cost of living makes these low offers even more frustrating. It’s disheartening to see companies advertise decent pay only to offer much less during negotiations. As I reflect on this experience, I can’t help but feel that the job market is tough right now.
