I was laid off yesterday for the first time in my career after four years at the company. I had developed a new writing position that was so successful they ended up adding two more employees over the years. Just in March, I received a promotion and a raise, becoming a supervisor with more responsibilities, but it felt like they did it just to placate me since I was asking for more. Now, they’ve decided to eliminate my position and centralize the department, which was unexpected. My role was important for revenue, but I guess the recent downturn in numbers influenced their decision. I have a meeting with HR soon to discuss my severance package and COBRA benefits, but I have so many questions. My bosses have been tight-lipped about the situation, and I’m uncertain if my coworker was also let go or if it’s just me. I can't shake the feeling that this might be performance-related, but I didn’t get any clear communication about it being a company-wide decision. It all feels very cold and unsettling. I thought I had a good relationship with my team, but this has been jarring. They offered me 'four weeks' of severance, but it feels misleading since I was already due for a paycheck this week, so it’s effectively just one more paycheck after being let go. I’m living paycheck to paycheck with no savings, so this situation has me feeling pretty desperate. I plan to file for unemployment, but I’m unsure how much I’ll receive. I’ve already started looking for new job opportunities, but I’m feeling quite down about everything. I would appreciate any advice, especially regarding the severance amount and whether I should ask for more.
