I recently applied for a SOC intern role at a startup, but they offered me an interview for a DevOps/IT Support intern position instead. I saw it as a chance to practice my interview skills, especially since I hadn't done much in DevOps before. I spent three days studying the theory and felt fairly confident going into the interview. However, during the practical round, I struggled with a task that required setting up a custom VPC for EC2/RDS. I had only worked with the default VPC before, and I completely fumbled it. After the interview, I took the time to actually build the correct setup, including custom VPC, subnetting, route tables, and security groups. Now, I'm considering reaching out to HR to let them know I've closed the gap in my knowledge and to ask if there's still a chance for me to be considered. I'm curious if anyone has had success in similar situations or if it's typically a dead end after a poor performance in an interview.
