I'm currently navigating a significant career decision after overcoming cancer, and I'm seeking some guidance on compensation in sales. At 30 years old, I'm trying to rebuild my life and have recently enrolled in prerequisites to pursue a degree in dentistry, despite the daunting $550k debt without a cosigner. However, I'm concerned about the financial outlook for dentists, as many seem to struggle with low take-home pay, especially outside of rural areas. Previously, I majored in IT and worked in procurement, but I found it difficult to advance beyond $30/hour due to limited experience from temp jobs. This led me to consider a shift into sales, as I have some light experience in recruitment and have been told I have a natural talent for it, although I dread cold calling. I'm eager to learn more about the realistic salary expectations in sales. I've seen posts suggesting that sales can lead to high earnings, but I'm skeptical, especially since most sales professionals I know aren't making those lofty figures unless they're in real estate. I'm currently living with my parents and need to make a decision by Monday. I've applied to a few positions, including Enterprise Rent a Car and a staffing agency, and I'm contemplating whether to pursue sales more seriously or stick with my dental aspirations. I'm driven to succeed, but I want to ensure I'm making an informed decision about my future.
