I recently applied for a senior project manager role and received a response within two hours, which I thought was a good sign. However, the reply was an automated email directing me to a one-way video interview platform. They wanted me to record answers to five questions with a two-minute limit for each, all while being analyzed by an algorithm. I found the idea of performing for a robot to be quite degrading, especially since I have fifteen years of experience managing million-dollar budgets. I prefer a live conversation for interviews, as I believe they should be a two-way street. So, I reached out to the recruiter and expressed my preference for a human interaction. To my surprise, she labeled my refusal to participate in the digital screening as a "red flag" and suggested that it indicated I wasn't "tech-savvy" or a team player. This experience left me feeling frustrated and dehumanized, as it seems companies are prioritizing data processing over genuine human connection.
