I recently received an internal promotion offer at my current job with a large nonprofit health system in the Bay Area. I interviewed for a Project Manager role, which involved four rounds of interviews and was supposed to encompass a variety of responsibilities, including operational management, compliance tracking, and overseeing two assistants. However, I was surprised to learn that the position is actually coded as an assistant role, which is the lowest pay grade in my department. The offered pay is $50/hr, which represents a 30% increase from my current salary, but it’s still below the market rate for a Project Manager in this area. I countered with a request for a higher salary and a written review of my pay and classification after a year, but they insisted that $50 is final and there are no guarantees for future growth. They also mentioned that they would like a 3-4 year commitment from me, but this is all verbal with no formal agreement. I’m finishing my master’s in business with a focus on project management and have my PMP application approved, which makes this offer tempting. However, I’m concerned about the mismatch between the job description and the actual title and pay. I’m trying to decide if I should accept this as a stepping stone for experience or walk away. My current job is stable and allows me time to focus on school, so I’m weighing my options carefully.
