I recently read an article from the Wall Street Journal that really made me think about the current job market. It stated that if you have a job, you likely don’t have to worry about losing it. However, that feels disconnected from the reality many of us are facing. I've seen friends and colleagues lose their jobs, and the anxiety of not knowing when the next layoff might happen is palpable. The article mentioned that the unemployment rate is at 4.2%, which seems low compared to historical standards, but I can't help but feel that this number doesn't tell the whole story. It doesn't account for those who are underemployed, taking multiple part-time jobs just to make ends meet, or those who have stopped looking for work altogether out of frustration. I believe a more accurate unemployment figure would be around 7.6%, factoring in discouraged workers and part-time employees who want full-time work. Some estimates even suggest that the real number should be closer to 24% when considering those who lack full-time jobs or earn below a living wage. It’s frustrating to see how the statistics can be manipulated to paint a more favorable picture than what many of us are experiencing.
