I am currently facing a pending layoff from my role at a small tech company where I've worked for over a decade. After our company was acquired, I was integrated into a new team, which was already a challenging transition. Unfortunately, shortly after I joined, the head of the department left unexpectedly, and a new director was brought in. This new director has been gradually replacing legacy employees with his own team, and it's become apparent that many of us are being informally demoted. To complicate matters further, the product I worked on has been deemed unsuitable for the new company's business strategy and is being phased out. This puts my position in jeopardy, as my expertise in that product was a significant part of my value to the team. Surprisingly, I have not been laid off yet, but I am not being assigned any new tasks, which leads me to believe they may be trying to push me out or simply holding onto my position to maintain budget for a future hire. I am eager to understand how much time I might have left in this role. I've attempted to gauge my future by asking my manager about upcoming projects, but he has been quite evasive. I am already actively looking for new opportunities, but the uncertainty of my situation is quite stressful, especially considering the current job market and my age of over 45 in the tech industry. I would appreciate any advice on how to navigate this situation both mentally and strategically.
