I’m an 18-year-old freshman in college, and I recently found myself in a tough situation that’s affecting my health and overall well-being. About a month and a half ago, I started a part-time job as an English tutor, working around 21 hours a week. Initially, I struggled with the job because my manager was strict and didn’t seem to appreciate my age. However, I quickly fell in love with teaching, especially connecting with my 6th graders who showed me so much affection. Unfortunately, the job has become overwhelming. My health is deteriorating—I’m experiencing constant nausea and even throwing up from stress. My academic performance is suffering, and with registration for next semester approaching, I realize I need to free up my schedule to focus on my studies. I’ve also lost touch with my personal life; I used to enjoy playing piano, learning French, and spending time with friends, but all of that has stopped since I took the job. Financially, I don’t need the income, so my commitment to this job is purely out of love for teaching and a sense of obligation. I took a day off recently, and the relief I felt made me realize how much I need to prioritize my health and academics. Now, I’m grappling with guilt about potentially quitting. I worry about being perceived as someone who couldn’t handle the job and feel like I would be letting down the kids who care about me. I’m seeking advice on whether I should quit or push through this transition stress, and if quitting is the right choice, how to overcome the mental block and guilt associated with stepping down from a job I genuinely love. I also want to know how to give notice to my strict manager without feeling like a failure. Any insights from those who have been in a similar situation would be greatly appreciated.
