I recently graduated with a master's degree and have been job hunting in the environmental GIS field for a couple of months. I received an offer from a large consulting firm that I find appealing, especially since it offers a mostly remote work environment and a starting salary of $65,000 plus a $5,000 sign-on bonus. They asked me to consider the offer over the weekend and get back to them today. I also have another offer from a telecom company for $70,000, which I accepted, but it requires me to work fully in person and I'm not particularly excited about it. My initial plan was to go with the consulting role and inform the telecom company that I was backing out. Today, I had a conversation with the recruiter regarding the consulting offer. I inquired about the possibility of negotiating the base salary, given my other offer. I explained that while the sign-on bonus would bring my total compensation close to the telecom offer, I was hoping to get the base salary closer to $70,000, considering the long-term benefits like 401k matching and potential raises. I’ve been feeling a lot of stress about securing a job after college, and now I'm worried that I might have jeopardized my chances by asking for more. I reassured her that the consulting firm is still my top choice, but I felt it was necessary to ask. She mentioned she would check with her team and get back to me either later today or tomorrow, but I spoke with her just a couple of hours before the end of her workday, so I didn't expect an answer right away. This is a large consulting firm, and I can't imagine they would rescind the offer just for negotiating, but my anxiety is through the roof right now. I'm hoping for some encouraging words as I navigate this situation.
