I recently decided to withdraw from an interview process for a position I was pursuing at a local company. My colleague and I were both part of a recent mass layoff, and we often find ourselves applying for the same roles due to our niche experience in this city. We've both made it to the later stages of interviews for the same job, but while I was invited to the next round, my colleague seems to be in limbo, waiting for a response. I have a few more years of experience than her, but she is incredibly enthusiastic about this opportunity and meets all the qualifications. After my last interview, I learned that the role would require occasional overtime and is more demanding than initially described. Given my recent burnout from corporate life, I felt a pit in my stomach thinking about returning to that environment. With personal life changes on the horizon, including potential relocation and going back to school, I realized I was hoping for a typical 9-5 job that would allow me to clock out and disconnect. I don't want to waste the company's time if I'm not fully committed, so I decided to withdraw. In my withdrawal, I want to recommend my colleague for the position without making it obvious that we've been discussing our applications. I genuinely believe she would excel in this role and would be thrilled to get it. I'm also looking for ways to maintain a connection with the company for future opportunities, should my situation change next year. While it feels disappointing to give up a decent opportunity, my gut tells me that this pace is too fast for me right now, especially considering my past experiences.
