I recently found out that the maximum weekly unemployment benefit in California is $450. This was confirmed by a representative when I applied. I also learned that this amount is pre-tax, meaning I can opt to have 10% deducted for taxes. It's interesting to note that this has been the maximum since the economic downturn in 2008, although back then it was enough to cover my rent. Now, with the ongoing financial challenges, it feels like the situation has worsened, especially since California still owes a significant debt to the federal government from COVID-related unemployment loans. It seems like this $450 cap is going to stick around for a while.

I was terminated from my job in California last week, and my health insurance ended last month. I'm currently facing the challenge of finding affordable health insurance, as the COBRA options I looked into are 2 to 3 times what I was previously paying. Right now, I have no insurance and I'm 40 years old, able to work, but I'm waiting for my unemployment interview. I've never had to navigate this kind of situation before since I've always had a job, and I didn't realize how expensive health insurance could be without employer support. I'm the head of my household, and while I can rely on my savings for a little while, I really need to find a more sustainable solution for health insurance. I've heard suggestions about looking into Medicaid or ACA insurance based on my unemployment income, and I've been advised to contact Covered California for assistance. I'm hoping to get some guidance on how to move forward.
